SBP Issues First Digital Banking License to Easypaisa

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially awarded its first digital retail banking (DRB) license to Easypaisa Digital Bank, a move set to revolutionize financial services in the country. This milestone underscores Pakistan’s commitment to digital banking and financial inclusion, particularly for unbanked and underserved populations.

Easypaisa Digital Bank: A Step Towards Financial Inclusion

Previously known as Telenor Microfinance Bank Limited, Easypaisa now has the regulatory authorization to launch comprehensive digital banking operations. This initiative will promote secure, accessible, and innovative financial services while prioritizing cybersecurity and consumer trust.

During the license awarding ceremony, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad emphasized the need for strengthening digital literacy and enhancing cybersecurity frameworks. He highlighted that the rise of digital banking comes with challenges that must be addressed to maintain the integrity of Pakistan’s financial ecosystem.

Easypaisa’s Vision: Driving SME Digital Transformation

Governor Jameel Ahmad urged Easypaisa to leverage expertise from its sponsor, Ant Group, and focus on digitizing small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This strategic direction aligns with Pakistan’s digital banking vision, aiming to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through customer-centric solutions.

Additionally, four other digital banks, currently in pilot phases, are encouraged to introduce innovative financial services for businesses and individuals, further boosting financial inclusion and economic growth.

Pakistan’s Evolving Digital Banking Landscape

Pakistan has developed a strong digital banking infrastructure, especially post-COVID-19. While many commercial banks offer limited digital services, the issuance of the first DRB license represents a significant leap in online banking accessibility.

Easypaisa Karobar: Revolutionizing Retail with Digital Banking

Easypaisa is at the forefront of digital innovation, particularly with its initiative Easypaisa Karobar, aimed at transforming traditional retail value chains through technology-driven solutions.

At a press conference, Irfan Wahab Khan, Chairman of Easypaisa Digital Bank, outlined future plans, including facilitating remittances for overseas Pakistanis and offering housing and car financing solutions.

Jahanzeb Khan, President & CEO of Easypaisa Digital Bank, revealed that Easypaisa already serves 50 million customers, manages Rs80 billion in deposits, and disburses 65,000 microloans daily through its mobile platform.

Strategic Support from Ant Group and Telenor Group

Douglas Feagin, Board Member and President of Ant International, reaffirmed Ant Group’s commitment to supporting Easypaisa in its mission to empower millions of Pakistanis through inclusive financial services.

Easypaisa Digital Bank is jointly owned by Telenor Group (holding a 55% stake) and Ant Group (holding 45%). Telenor, a leading telecom operator in Asia and the Nordics, sees this partnership as a pivotal step in advancing Pakistan’s digital financial ecosystem.

SBP’s Digital Banking Roadmap

The SBP’s decision to grant the DRB license follows its issuance of No Objection Certificates (NoCs) in January 2023 to five applicants, including:

  • Easypaisa Digital Bank
  • HugoBank Limited
  • KT Bank Pakistan Limited
  • Mashreq Bank Pakistan Limited
  • Raqami Islamic Digital Bank Limited

These entities were granted In-Principle Approval (IPA) in September 2023 to ensure operational readiness, marking the beginning of a new digital banking era in Pakistan.

With the State Bank of Pakistan’s strategic push towards digital banking, Easypaisa is set to transform Pakistan’s financial landscape. The launch of Easypaisa Digital Bank will play a crucial role in providing secure, innovative, and accessible financial solutions to millions of Pakistanis, promoting economic growth and financial inclusion.
